2023 SPRING BELT PROMOTIONS

We would like to congratulate the members of our jiu-jitsu family promoted today. Not many people in the world are willing to put in the work and make the sacrifices to truly learn a combat art. It’s not easy; that’s why most drop out or never even try. This promotion is a testament to your character. Although belts may be nothing more than a piece of cloth, they symbolize something far greater—the warrior spirit. We are very proud of you!

Spring 2022 Belt Promotions

One of the greatest honors of being a teacher is seeing your students grow and develop, not just as martial artists but also as people. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of few remaining martial arts that does not reward participation. Belts are earned on the mat.

We are the by-product of the wars we wage in life and the struggles we overcome. For without suffering, there is no growth.

We are extremely proud of this year's class. It is an honor to be a part of your journey.

Remembering Brian Gassaway

Remembering Brian Gassaway

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, teacher, and mentor, Brian Gassaway (who was the head coach of our striking program).

The samurai lived by an unwritten moral code: the Bushido. Brian embodied the virtues of this code—loyalty, courage, justice, honor, mercy, compassion, character, and self-control—by his actions. He lived his life with purpose and goodness, dedicating every waking moment to being a better person, husband, friend, fighter, and coach. And at the same time, he elevated the lives of all the people around him.

Very few people have the courage to follow their dreams. Brian was one of them. He tested himself all over the world against some of the best fighters on the planet having competed in the UFC, Bellator, WEC, King of the Cage, Iron Heart Crown, Shooto and Pancrase. Brian had his hand raised 29 times but walked out of the ring a better man, a better fighter, after every single contest. In 2018, Brian was inducted into the Illinois Martial Arts Hall of Fame. And, announced just yesterday, in honor of Brian’s contribution to the art of Muay Thai in America, the Thai Boxing Association-Sanctioning Authority has created the Brian Gassaway Award.

With more than 50 professional MMA fights and countless kickboxing and Muay Thai competitions, Brian was one of the most experienced fighters and coaches in the world. It is as a coach where he truly excelled. Brian’s selfless pursuit of improving the lives of his students through the study of martial arts was apparent to all. He gave his students purpose, pulling many up during their darkest moments. Being the light that showed them the path forward.

Whether you were training for a fight on the big stage, competing in a smoker in a church basement, or training just to better yourself, Brian showed you the same love, effort, and attention. You always felt safe knowing that he was in the corner. His calmness gave you confidence as he wrapped your hands in preparation to go into battle. His words gave you the knowledge and experience of the countless wars he fought as you marched to the ring. And his energy gave you strength as the bell rang and you walked towards your opponent. One thing was certain: You always knew that Brian was fighting right there alongside you. And after the fights were fought, after the fans left the stadium, after the lights went dark, Brain was still there, sitting quietly alongside you.

Please know that as much as he helped you, you also helped him. You were the reason he lived. You gave him breath. He absorbed and learned from your experience, sharing it with the next student. As students and teachers of martial arts, we are a sum of the students and teachers before us.

Brian leaves behind his wife and best friend, Mimi, mother, and brother, Wesley.

Brian, our friend, our teacher, you will not be forgotten. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Because of you, we are stronger; we are braver; we are better people. I hope you knew how much you meant to us.

We love you, champ.

Chicago Stay-at-Home Advisory Effective November 16, 2020

Chicago Stay-at-Home Advisory Effective November 16, 2020

The number of daily COVID cases in the City of Chicago now exceeds 2000 cases per day and the test positivity rate is above 15%. Both of these numbers are very alarming. Starting today, the City has issued a stay-at-home advisory. The advisory currently does not impact us as we already operate within the proposed limits. The gym will remain open for now.

Since reopening in July, the gym has not experienced any reported cases of COVID. We have taken significant measures to keep the community safe, including purchasing new air filtration systems.

Given the rise in cases, we are taking a few additional precautions:
- Not accepting any new members
- Limiting the size of grappling classes to 8 members
- All classes will be 50 minutes, ending 10 minutes before the end of the hour, for cleaning
- More frequent gym cleaning
- Exit the gym within five minutes of the class ending

But we can't do this alone. You must stay diligent and not take any unnecessary risks. The risks you take outside of the gym can and will impact our community inside the gym. This is not the time to take chances.

Please pre-register for any classes you plan on attending. No more exceptions. If you are not registered, you will not be allowed to train. If you can't make a class you registered for, remove your name from the list. Space is limited and every spot is important.

It's not all bad news. Both Pfizer and Moderna have announced early results that their vaccines are at least 90% effective! Most people should have access to a vaccine by early spring.

In the meantime, we know what works: masks, frequent hand washing, and physical distance. Don't get lazy. Keep your masks on at the gym at all times.

Also, continue to monitor yourself for symptoms. Do not come to the gym if you are experiencing any COVID symptoms or have been exposed. If you have been exposed, you are required to self-quarantine and stay home for 14 days. No exceptions.

We have to do this together. And we will.
